I am challenging my students to read 30 books by the end of the school year.
I know they can do it!
Students will have time in class to read their books. They are also expected to read each night for 20 minutes. While I know that reading 30 books is a big expectation, this goal can be reached easily if students are reading every day in class and at home.

Why are we taking the 30 Book Challenge?
The purpose of the Challenge is to get students reading different types of books and to instill a of love for reading. Students will choose what they read, which will help them stay interested and focused. Research has proven that reading voraciously from a variety of genres is the best way to improve ourselves as readers.
How does the 30 Book Challenge Work?
- Students read books that interest them, at their pace, in class and at home.
- Students record books that they have read, and keep a running list of books they would like to read.
- On a weekly basis, students write a letter to the teacher to discuss their current book.
- Teacher reads and responds to these letters and returns notebooks to students.
- Bi-weekly student-teacher check-ins in class to discuss their reading journey.
- Students are not required to complete any reading logs.
- At the end of each book, students sign up for a Book Commercial, or Book Review.
The Guidelines
- Each book must be read by your fourth grader. No picture books will count toward their goal. Books they read in class or are read by a teacher count in their 30 book total. Students may not read books that they have already read in the past.
- Students will read "just right" books for them, to ensure students are not struggling through a tough, or boring book. This means that students have the right to try a book out, and drop it if it is not working for them for any reason. The purpose of this challenge is to help instill a love for reading, not to make sure they get to a number.
- Students will use the list of genres to push students to read book types they may not have read before. However, these genres do not have to be read in a certain order.
- For each book read, the students must write it down in their Reader's Notebook: Reading List Page
- Books that are over 350 pages count as two books.
